How to prevent sun damage

Try to avoid the sun's most intense rays by staying out of the sun during the middle of the day.

Be especially careful if you are around water, sand, or any surface that will reflect and therefore intensify the sun's rays. Remember, the sun's rays are more intense the higher you get in elevation.

When purchasing sunscreen, select a brand with an SPF of at least 15, preferably greater (45 - 60).

In general, infants' skin is much thinner and more sensitive to the sun than adults' skin, even in individuals with darker complexions. The amount of sunscreen needed depends on how light the child's complexion is.

Sunscreen is most effective if first applied 20-30 minutes before sun exposure.

Use sunscreen whenever you expect to be in the sun for thirty minutes or more, and re-apply after swimming.

Make sure effective use of clothing, hats, and other physical barriers are worn to protect the skin from the sun.

And though even with this fact, the rest of the species in the animal kingdom may not care aboutthis, penis size continues to be of great concernto many of us humans.

In fact, some consider having a large penis as a mark of masculinity while there are those who are concerned thattheir penis is too small to satisfy their sexual partner. However, these insecurities only haveled to many erroneous beliefs about penis size thus leading to a whole industry devoted to penis enlargement which is really not necessary. However, in a travel through time, we can see that like the proportions of beauty, so too has the dimensions of the ideal penis size changed.

In past perceptions of the ancient Greek and Roman art, it is common to see the male genitalia to be relatively smaller than one would expect for the size of the man. In fact, Renaissance art followed this aesthetic as can be seen in Michelangelo's David. This was due to the belief that at that time, an uncircumcised small penis was desirable compared to a long, thick, circumcised penis which was then viewed as comical.

Psychologically speaking, this may be attributed to the Greeks' adoration of an undeveloped body. Or this could be just a real portrayal of the actual size of the real models at that time that has to go to the ordeal of having to stand in cold studios.

Nowadays, it is completely the opposite. The hullabaloo spent on this entire penis size thing is only apparent in the forwarded theories of held popular cultures, where some state that it is possible to predict the size of someone’s penis just by observing the other features of the body. The features usually include the hands, feet, nose or height.

One urban legend even suggests that the size of a fully erect penis is approximately the length from the tip of a man's thumb to the tip of his index finger if a 90° angle is made with the two digits. However, the suggested links between penis size and other body parts has been investigated only by a relatively small number of groups, which may well be inaccurate.

However, a potential explanation for some observations on these links is that the development of the penis in an embryo is controlled by some of the same Hox genes, in particular the HOXA13 and HOXD13, as the limbs develop. Still, Science can only conclude that given the large number of genes which control the development of the human body shape as well as the effects of hormones during childhood and adolescence it is an inaccurate prediction of penis size to have it linked to measuring a different part of the human body.

For the long and short of all issues about penis size thoug, what remains is that penis size is determined by genetics especially as the size changes during puberty. Penis growth starts between the ages of 10 to 14 years, though some boys are younger and some are older. Its is the testicles who begin to enlarge first and then the hair grows in the pubic region. The penis grows in length first and then in girth slightly later to that.

An average penis size for the mature non-erect adult is between 3 to 5 inches. However, for teenagers, they have to wait one or two more years after they have stopped growing in height before they can be sure about their final penis size since body size can affect the penis length. -Low Blood Sugar (hypoglycemia): Common in those who have diabetes. Common symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, shakiness, weakness, hunger, dizziness and nausea.
-Menopause: Women experiencing menopause have hot flashes which causes a rise in temperature accompanied by sweating and feeling of intense heat (due to drop in estrogen levels).
-Low Levels of Male Hormones: Men with low testosterone levels (condition known as hypogonadism) caused by reduced functioning of the testicles can also experience hot flashes.

-Bathe Daily: Prevents bacteria from growing on the skin's surface, which causes an odor when mixed with perspiration.
-Dry Thoroughly After Bathing: Bacteria thrive on damp spaces.
-Wear Proper Foot Wear: Shoes made of natural material (such as leather) help feet breathe. Wear socks made of cotton or wool and pantyhose with cotton soles as they help keep feet dry by absorbing any moisture.
-Choose Natural Fiber Clothing: Wear natural fabrics such as cotton, wool and silk, which allow your skin to breath. When exercising wear high tech fabrics that keep moisture away from the skins surface.

The chief ones are:
*unwanted pregnancy.
*venereal diseases (such as gonorrhoea and, much less commonly, syphilis).
*other sexually transmitted infections (such as herpes, pubic lice, and viral warts and especially the 21st century‘s major risk - chlamydia).
*HIV - the virus which can cause AIDS.
*cancer of the cervix.
*female infertility – due to pelvic infection caused by sex with an infected guy.It’s almost inevitable that other sexual infections will arise during this century – especially if the human race keeps going in for unsafe sex! Germs have a nasty way of exploiting people’s behaviour, which is why – soon after the swinging 60s and 70s – herpes and HIV suddenly emerged.

Back in the 20th century, many people, both straight and gay, enjoyed sex with a variety of partners assuming that there was very little danger. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case – since disease rates have increased so much. Today, it’s only common sense to practise safe sex.

What is safe sex?
You could say that the only totally safe form of sex is masturbation. Technically, all sexual activity with a partner carries some risk, though the danger of infections is practically non-existent if the two people are completely faithful to each other. ‘Petting’ with the hands is a relatively safe form of sex, and is certainly much less risky than intercourse. So if you’re a teenager and you can keep to hand-petting (rather than ‘going all the way’), you will definitely be safer. What about ‘petting’ with the mouth? This is a bit more risky, since it can pass on infections like gonorrhoea and herpes (and very rarely syphilis). But at least it can’t get you pregnant! It is now known that oral sex can pass on HIV, though a UK Government committee has assessed the risk as relatively low – and therefore not as great as that associated with vaginal or rectal intercourse.

Condoms
If you are going to have sexual intercourse with someone who is not a regular, faithful partner, you should always use a condom. This can be either a male condom or (much less commonly) a female one. The condom should be worn throughout the entire act of intercourse – putting it on when you are halfway through is simply asking for trouble. Other 'barrier methods' of contraception, such as the diaphragm or cap, do offer some but very little, protection against the transmission of infection. Another form of barrier is a ‘dental dam,’ which quite a few people now use when giving or receiving cunnilingus – that is, oral sex given to a woman by her partner (male or female). It certainly provides at least some protection against germs.

Alcohol and other drugs
One of the greatest risks to your health is having sex when you've drunk too much alcohol. Many people who would normally practise safe sex do become pregnant, or else catch HIV or venereal diseases, through having unprotected sex while drunk. Some other recreational drugs do also ‘lower your resistance’ – and so make you more likely to run into trouble sexually.Women should be especially aware of the recent rise in ‘drink-spiking’ – the practice in which a man slips a drug into your glass with the intention of making you so woozy that you won’t be able to resist sex.But overall, alcohol is probably the UK’s most important cause of unsafe sex. If you are on a boozy night out, and you’re in doubt as to whether it would be safe to have sex with someone - don't!

Whooping cough (pertussis)

Whooping cough (pertussis) is an acute, highly contagious respiratory infection that is caused by a bacterium. The first outbreaks of pertussis were described in the 16th century. The bacterium responsible for the infection, Bordetella pertussis, was not isolated until 1906. The incidence of pertussis has been steadily increasing since the 1980s. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 25,827 cases of pertussis were reported in 2004 in the U.S.

Can whooping cough be prevented with a vaccine?
Whooping cough commonly affects infants and young children but can be prevented by immunization with pertussis vaccine. Pertussis vaccine is most commonly given in combination with the vaccines for diphtheria and tetanus. (Pertussis is the "P" in the DTaP combination inoculation routinely given to children, and the "p" in the Tdap vaccine administered to adolescents and adults.) Since immunity from the pertussis vaccine wears off with time, many teenagers and adults get whooping cough.

What are the stages, symptoms, and signs of whooping cough?
*The first stage of whooping cough is known as the catarrhal stage. In the catarrhal stage, which typically lasts from one to two weeks, an infected person has symptoms characteristic of an upper respiratory infection, including runny nose, sneezing, low-grade fever, or a mild, occasional cough, similar to the common cold.
The cough gradually becomes more severe, and after one to two weeks, the second stage begins.
*It is during the second stage (the paroxysmal stage) that the diagnosis of whooping cough usually is suspected. The second stage is characterized by:

-Bursts (paroxysms) of coughing, or numerous rapid coughs, are apparently due to difficulty expelling thick mucus from the airways in the lungs. Bursts of coughing increase in frequency during the first one to two weeks, remain constant for two to three weeks, and then gradually begin to decrease in frequency.
-At the end of the bursts of rapid coughs, a long inspiratory effort (breathing in) is usually accompanied by a characteristic high-pitched "whoop."
-During an attack, the individual may become cyanotic (turn blue) from lack of oxygen.
-Children and young infants appear especially ill and distressed.
-Vomiting (referred to by doctors as posttussive vomiting) and exhaustion commonly follow the episodes of coughing.
-The person usually appears normal between episodes.
-Paroxysmal attacks occur more frequently at night, with an average of 15-24 attacks per 24 hours.
-The paroxysmal stage usually lasts from one to six weeks but may persist for up to 10 weeks.
-Infants under 6 months of age may not have the strength to have a whoop, but they do have paroxysms of coughing.
The third stage of whooping cough is the recovery or convalescent stage. In the convalescent stage, recovery is gradual. The cough becomes less paroxysmal and usually disappears over two to three weeks; however, paroxysms often recur with subsequent respiratory infections for many months.

How is whooping cough transmitted?
Whooping cough is highly contagious and is spread among people by direct contact with fluids from the nose or mouth of infected people. People contaminate their hands with respiratory secretions from an infected person and then touch their own mouth or nose. In addition, small bacteria-containing droplets enter the air during coughing or sneezing. People can become infected by breathing in these drops.

Can adults get whooping cough?

Although whooping cough is considered to be an illness of childhood, adults may also develop the disease. The illness usually is milder in adults than in children, but the duration of the paroxysmal cough is just as long as in children. The characteristic whoop that occurs after paroxysmal bouts of coughing is recognized in only 20%-40% of adults with whooping cough. Because immunity from the pertussis vaccine decreases over time but does not necessarily disappear, adults who do become infected may have retained a partial degree of immunity against the infection that results in a milder illness. Whooping cough in adults is more common than usually appreciated, accounting for up to 7% of adult illnesses that cause coughing each year. Infected adults are a reservoir (source) of infection for children.

How is whooping cough diagnosed?

When a patient has the typical symptoms of whooping cough, the diagnosis can be made from the clinical history. However, the disease and its symptoms, including its severity, can vary among affected individuals. In cases where the diagnosis is not certain or a doctor wants to confirm the diagnosis, laboratory tests can be carried out. Culture of the bacterium Bordetella pertussis from nasal secretions can establish the diagnosis. Another test that has been used to successfully identify the bacterium and diagnose pertussis is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test that can identify genetic material from the bacterium in nasal secretions,
How is whooping cough treated?

Antibiotics directed against Bordetella pertussis can be effective in reducing the severity of pertussis when administered early in the course of the disease. Antibiotic therapy can also help reduce the risk of transmission of the bacterium to other household members as well as to others who may come into contact with an infected person. Unfortunately, most people with pertussis are diagnosed later with the condition in the second (paroxysmal) stage of the disease. Treatment with antibiotics is recommended for anyone who has had the disease for less than 21 days. Azithromycin (Zithromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole are antibiotics which have been shown to be effective in treating whooping cough. It is unclear whether antibiotics have any benefit for people who have been ill with pertussis for longer periods, although antibiotic therapy is still often considered for this group. There is no proven effective treatment for the paroxysms of coughing that accompany pertussis.
Antibiotics are also routinely administered to people who have had close contact with an infected person, regardless of their vaccination status.

Complications of whooping cough (pertussis)

The most common complication and the cause of most pertussis-related deaths is secondary bacterial pneumonia. (Secondary bacterial pneumonia is bacterial pneumonia that follows another infection of the lung, be it viral or bacterial. Secondary pneumonia is caused by a different virus or bacterium than the original infection.) Young infants are at highest risk for whooping cough and also for pertussis-associated complications, including secondary pneumonia. Data from 2001-2003 indicate that secondary pneumonia occurred among 4.9% of all reported pertussis cases.

Pertussis can cause serious illness and even death in young children; 13 children died from the infection in 2003. From 2004-2005, 66 deaths due to whooping cough were reported to the CDC, and 56 of these were children under 3 months of age. Most of the pertussis-related deaths have occurred in children who have not been vaccinated or who are too young to have received the vaccine.
Other possible complications of pertussis include seizures, encephalopathy (abnormal function of the brain due to decreased oxygen delivery to the brain), reactive airway disease (asthma), dehydration, and malnutrition.
